Data Cabling FAQs

Cat 5, Cat 5E & Cat 6 & Cat 6A are all suitable choices depending upon application. Cat 6 cabling is backwards compatible with Cat 5/5E, however we don’t recommend using them in tandem as the Cat 5/5E components will become a chokepoint and slow down performance. We also don’t recommend mixing components from different manufacturers as you could end up with un-optimised performance.
There is still much debate regarding the use of shielded or unshielded cables. We will use whichever the customer prefers. Shielded cables and components are more expensive and more time consuming to terminate. If a shielded cable is used and it is not properly grounded, the performance may be worse than an unshielded cable.
The short answer is yes, however it depends on the strength of the signal being sent, the type of signal and the speed of the cable. The commonly accepted rule of thumb for data cabling is 90 meters, however this range can be extended by devices that pickup and re-transmit the signal down the line. Alternatively, fibre optic cables can transmit data much further, up to 100km in some instances.
The main benefit to installing cabling during construction is the lower cost and ease of installation during the build. The speed at which data is transmitted over cable is faster and more reliable than using WIFI and for many applications it is preferred.

There are 2 main types of network cables; fiber-optic and twisted pair (ethernet cable).

Ethernet cables have been the staple of data transmission since their inception in the 1970’s. They use a number of different wires (8 or 4) that are twisted together to transmit data between devices via electricity. They are relatively cheap and can be used by just about every single device that connects to a network. However, as a network backbone they do have some drawbacks such as its operational distance (about 90m) and its vulnerability to electromagnetic interference (EMI).

Fibre optic cables consist of a core made from thin strands of glass or plastic. The core is wrapped in cladding which is inside a buffer, which is wrapped in a jacket. Fibre optic cables transmit data via light rather than electricity as per a conventional cable. This makes them extremely fast and future proof, but more expensive when compared to conventional cables. Due to transmitting data via light, fibre optic cables also have the added benefit of not being interfered with by electromagnetic interference, surges, spikes, and more. This makes them ideal for industrial applications and locations with heavy interference.
